GENTLEMAN GEORGE? Hardback. 2003. 1st.Ed. 304pp. Small dent to front cover o/w fine in near fine D/W. (No inscriptions, price unclipped). Gentleman George? is the autobiography of George Duffield, the longest-serving jockey still racing. George has seen many changes in over 35 years in the saddle, from his tough apprenticeship in the 1960s to winning classic races in the 1990s. He is a typically gritty Yorkshireman, and the story of him whacking Peter Savill, chairman of the British Horseracing Board, is already passing into racing legend. The book has many hilarious stories involving the likes of Lester Piggott and Sir Mark Prescott, and he is very candid about some uncomfortable aspects of his own life. You have to admire how George has been able to fight back to the top of his profession after a really messy divorce threatened his career when he should have been looking forward to a comfortable retirement.
